What to do if you are nervous
If the idea of standing in front of all your favourite people and saying your vows out loud makes you nervous, you are absolutely not alone.
In fact, I’d say most couples feel this way at some point when planning their wedding. It’s a big moment full of emotion, attention, and a whole lot of love in one place… and yes, that can feel a little overwhelming.
The good news? Nerves are completely normal and can even make it more meaningful!
Here’s a few tips to keep those nerves under wraps…
1. Reframe the nerves
That nervous energy you’re feeling? It’s not a bad thing because it usually comes from caring deeply about the moment and wanting it to be special. Try to think of nerves less as fear and more as excitement.
2. Remember what the moment is really about
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that “everyone is watching me.” But in reality, your guests aren’t there to judge you, they’re there because they love you. Shift your focus to your partner because at the end of the day, your ceremony is about the two of you and isn’t a performance.
3. Practice (but don’t aim for perfection)
If you’re writing your own vows, it can really help to read them out loud a few times before the day. This builds confidence and helps you get comfortable with the words. Don’t stress about memorising everything or delivering it perfectly. A little stumble, a laugh, or a tear will make your ceremony feel genuine and heartfelt.
4. Breathe… properly
It sounds simple, but when nerves kick in, our breathing tends to become shallow and quick. Take a slow, deep breath before you begin speaking. There is no rush, so pause when you need to.
5. Trust your celebrant
A good celebrant will guide you through the entire ceremony, gently prompting you when needed and creating a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. You won’t be left wondering what to do next, I’ve got you x
6. Let it be what it is
Your ceremony doesn’t need to be flawless to be beautiful. In fact, it’s often the unscripted moments like the shaky voices and the laughter that people remember most
