How to Write Wedding Vows That Feel So You
Step 1: Get Inspired (Without Copy-Pasting)
Before you start writing, take a moment to reflect. Grab a cuppa (or a glass of bubbly), sit somewhere quiet, and think about your love story.
Here are a few prompts to get you going:
When did you first realise you were in love?
What’s one thing your partner does that makes you feel like the luckiest person alive?
What’s a small, everyday moment that you never want to take for granted?
How does your partner make you a better person?
Jot down anything that makes you smile, tear up, or laugh out loud. Those moments are gold!
Step 2: Pick a Vibe
Your vows should reflect your relationship. Are you romantic, funny, sentimental, quirky? Choose a style that feels natural to you.
Romantic – "From the moment I met you, I knew my heart had found its home."
Funny – "I promise to always let you have the last slice of pizza… most of the time."
Sentimental – "You are my safe place, my adventure, my greatest love story."
Hot tip: A mix of sweet + lighthearted is always a winner!
Step 3: Include These 3 Things (It’s a Must!)
To make sure your vows hit all the right notes, include:
A Personal Touch – Mention something only you two would understand. A memory, an inside joke, or a moment that defines your relationship.
A Promise – This is the heart of your vows. "I promise to support you, to stand beside you, to always have your back—even when we disagree on what to watch on Netflix."
A Look Ahead – Paint a picture of your future together. "I can’t wait to spend forever with you, navigating life’s ups and downs, and laughing through it all."
Step 4: Keep It Short & Sweet
Vows should be short enough to keep guests engaged, but long enough to be meaningful. Aim for 1-2 minutes max (around 150-200 words).
If you can, read them out loud before the big day. You’ll catch any awkward phrasing and make sure they flow naturally.
Step 5: Don’t Stress About Perfection!
The best vows aren’t the ones that sound like poetry, they’re the ones that come from the heart.
If you get emotional? That’s beautiful.
If you stumble on a word? No one will care.
If you tear up? Everyone will tear up with you.
So take a deep breath, speak from the heart, and remember, your partner will love whatever you say, because it’s coming from you.
